Going to university in Germany as 30+ year old/Using Gi Bill benefits from Usa?

Posted in Germany forum

Ok, so I actually have more than one question but the main one is, will I stand out if I go to Germany for university (more so than just being a foreigner)? I would be 32 when I go (if I go) and it is definitely not uncommon to see even older than 30s going back to school here in the United States. Is that the same in Germany? Would I just feel awkward?

Some background info about me: I am currently serving in the United States Navy and will be separating from service next summer. At that point, I will be thinking about using my GI Bill benefits (basically free 4 years of college if you didn't know) and was thinking about using it in Germany as I am fond of the language and culture. I am already finishing up a bachelor's degree here in the States and will graduate by that time. I am going to use my benefits to obtain another degree.

This brings up another point. From what I have been reading, Germany actually has very low-cost higher education (basically free for foreigners in some cases?) and I'm wondering if it will end up being a waste to use my benefits in Germany. Does anyone have any experience with this? Maybe a veteran who has gone through this very same thing? Thanks for any input about my situation.

Firstly, you will not stand out in a German university, as life plans are less streamlined and more flexible than elsewhere (certainly more so than in the USA).
Secondly, while universities in Germany are cheap (there may be fees for non-EU citizens, higher degrees and/or courses held in English), living costs are not. You need to show financial reserves of €8700/year to get a student visa - and that isn't actually enough to survive in most places.
