Can't seem to get "requirements" for settling in Azores....

Posted in Azores forum

Hi All - I've contacted the Portuguese Embassy for Azores "requirements" (surely there MUST be a monthly $$$ amount they require for someone to take up residence) - and they sent me to the Consulate in NY - who sent me back to Wash. D.C. - I didn't get any answer from any source.

Also - if one takes up residency in the Azores - how does one go about signing up for health ins.? Is it expensive? I'm 63.

Also - does anyone have any info on requirements ($$$) - if one has a portfolio in U.S. or a pension - how is that handled??

We'll be making our 4th trip there this year - we love it more and more each time....

Once you become a resident you will be supported by the healthcare system here. My last doctor's visit was 5 euros and he ordered an MRI and I paid nothing. I have a small co-pay for prescriptions. They have two systems one private and the other "Family" doctor is government sponsored. When I go to my private doctor I pay out of pocket. But if I visit my family doctor I pay a small co-pay and when my family Dr referred me to a specialist I didn't pay anything. Everything has recently changed for permanent residents. I hope that helps.
My pension and investments are still taxed by the US. The laws that regulate this subject can get very complicate and are different from country to country. There are laws on double taxation, you'll just have to do your research.
PS. If you get in my area look me up.
