I was wondering if it is possible to leave the country for an extended period of time and being able to hold onto the permanent residence status.(Niederlassungserlaubnis) Can someone help me out. Essentially what I would like to do is have the option of returning to the US for some time but having the option of coming back. How does this work witht he German health insurance?

Do you have any knowledge on how your medical is handled while outside of the country for an extended period? Would I still have to pay a premium or would i be able to put it on hold?

It is allowed to leave temporarily and return. This usually means up to 6 months. If you want to return after a longer period, you must get permission from the Auslaenderbehoerde before you leave.
