Hi, Graham (or anyone else who might be able to help),

I may be on the other side of the Big Pond (Illinois, USA), but we hve this much in common: I, too, am looking to move to one of the Azores islands in the near future.
At first, I was pragmatic, and looked at traveling there on a vacation, first, taking a week to look around, get my bearings, find a small place for myself (I'm disabled, so my needs are pretty specific, 1 to 2 bedroom ground floor apartment or house with a few metres of ground onhand to plant a few roses and such, get some daily sun and ocean breezes, etc.). BUT, after six months of scouring travel agencies and flight deals, I've come to the conclusion that the $5,000+ it would cost me to "visit" for a week or two (it's almost $3000 just for the roundtrip air fare alone!!! yipes!) would be better-spent if I were to just one-way it there, and put some money down on a bungalow or cottage and just MOVE (take the leap, you know).

I was wondering how your info-search is going, since you posted a few months ago?
I have considered finding another like-minded soul, whom I can talk to, share info with, etc., even possibly 'roomie' with a few initial months... Have you had any luck in finding other expats already IN the Azores to talk to?
I need to find answers, myself, pretty fast, as the home I am renting right now will soon be going in to foreclosure (the owner can't keep it up anymore as he is getting too old) and I simply don't want to buy it from him (can't afford the price and upkeep for this huge Victorian two-family house, anyway!) and end up stuck HERE forever!

Anyway... would like to be friends with you, as well, to keep up with YOUR progress in your move...

    jipsi
